Hot Stamping Foil Peeling Off Plastic Parts? Causes and Fixes

Hot stamping foil peeling or not sticking on plastic parts? What to check first - and which grade works on PP, ABS and PVC. Practical fixes plus the tape-test methods that prove adhesion.

QUICK ANSWER

Foil usually peels off plastic parts for one of three reasons: the grade is not specified for that plastic, the die temperature is outside the rated 90-120 C window, or the part cannot take heat at all. Check the grade first - our plastics grade covers PP, PVC and PET parts at 90-120 C; for PE, PP and PVC parts where heat is a problem, cold stamping foil transfers onto a UV-curing adhesive at 160 W/cm2 or more, up to 40 m per minute. Then prove the fix with a tape test before the production run.

01 WHY THE BOND FAILS

A stamping foil bonds through its heat-activated adhesive layer: at the right temperature and pressure, the adhesive anchors the finish to the part surface. Two things commonly go wrong on plastics. First, a grade specified for paper or board may not behave the same way on a plastic - different plastics take heat and transfer differently. Second, the die setting may sit outside the window where the adhesive activates.
It tends to show up in familiar ways: the stamped logo rubs off, lifts at the edges after handling, or transfers patchy. That points at the grade and the settings, not the operator.

02 CHECK THESE THREE THINGS FIRST

Grade. Is your foil specified for the exact plastic you are stamping? Our plastics grade is rated for PP, PVC and PET parts - flat-bed or roller stamping, small to large areas - at 90-120 C. For PVC and ABS surfaces that will be printed or varnished after stamping, our post-stamp grade covers small and medium areas in the same 90-120 C range.
Temperature. The rated window for our plastics grades is 90-120 C. If your die runs below it, the adhesive may not fully activate; if the symptom appears only on some parts, check whether the temperature is stable across the run.
Heat sensitivity. Some parts - thin PE, PP and PVC components in particular - cannot take a heated die at all. For these, cold stamping foil is specified for exactly this surface set: it transfers onto a UV-curing adhesive layer at 160 W/cm2 or more and up to 40 m per minute on plastic, with good transfer and cutting properties.

03 PROVE THE FIX WITH A STANDARD TEST

Before blaming the machine or accepting a new batch, rate the adhesion the way the industry does - with a cross-cut and tape pull. Two widely used references are ISO 2409:2020 (Paints and varnishes — Cross-cut test) and ASTM D3359-23 (Standard Test Methods for Rating Adhesion by Tape Test). For parts that see handling or abrasion, scratch resistance can be rated with ISO 1518-1:2023 (Paints and varnishes — Determination of scratch resistance — Part 1: Constant-loading method).
Run the same test before and after every change, so you compare like for like - on your own parts, not a generic sample sheet.
A tape test on your own parts is the fastest way to settle a peeling complaint - it turns a guess into a number.

04 WHAT FIXES IT IN PRACTICE

Match the grade to the plastic, not the other way around: start with the plastics grade for PP, PVC and PET, and use the post-stamp grade where PVC or ABS parts will be printed or varnished after stamping.
Hold the die inside the 90-120 C window across the whole run. Where the part cannot take heat, switch to the cold route: UV-curing transfer at 160 W/cm2 or more, up to 40 m per minute on plastic.
Then confirm the result with the tape test - and where volume matters, our application guidance recommends a trial before bulk use.

05 NEXT STEP

Send us a sample of the part you are stamping - same resin, same surface finish - plus your machine details and the effect you need. Yuanji Foil is a hot stamping foil manufacturer in Hunan, China; our range includes standard, cold stamping, laser, pigment and coffee-tone foils for paper, plastics, textiles and leather. We will match the grade, prepare a sample, and support your tape-test trial before you commit to volume.
