02 BEFORE YOU FLY: PRACTICAL CHECKLIST
Pre-register online. The official Canton Fair website offers pre-registration and a buyer badge guide for overseas visitors. Registering before you travel saves time at the venue - and the buyer badge itself is free. Check the current steps on cantonfair.org.cn before departure, as procedures can change between sessions.
Sort your visa early. If you need an M visa, the fair's official invitation application service can support your visa paperwork. Apply well ahead of your travel dates and check the latest requirements with your local Chinese embassy or visa centre.
Book hotels early and near a metro line. Pazhou and the surrounding districts fill up quickly during the three phases. Metro Line 8 serves the exhibition complex, so a hotel along Line 8 keeps your daily commute simple.
03 ON THE GROUND: TIPS THAT SAVE HOURS
Carry your passport every day. You will need it to collect your badge and it is the standard ID for foreign visitors at the venue.
Arrive at opening time. The first two hours are the calmest for serious conversations with exhibitors - by midday the popular halls are packed.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light bag. You will walk several kilometres per day between halls; a compact bag for catalogues and samples beats a heavy backpack.
Set up mobile payment before you arrive. Alipay and WeChat Pay can be linked to international cards, and having one active on your phone covers taxis, meals and almost everything at the venue. Carry a little cash as a backup.
Collect samples and catalogues strategically. Note the booth number next to every catalogue you take - after day one they all start to look the same, and you will want to follow up with exact references.
04 AFTER THE FAIR: TURNING MEETINGS INTO ORDERS
The biggest mistake buyers make is leaving follow-up until after they fly home. The week after the fair is the best time to visit factories: exhibitors are still in work mode, and you are already in China.
