How to Choose the Right Hot Stamping Foil for Paper & Packaging
From surface and temperature to color and effect: a step-by-step selection guide for buying hot stamping foil for paper boxes, labels, cards and gift packaging.

QUICK ANSWER
For paper and packaging, match the foil to three things: the surface (coated, laminated or plain board), the stamping temperature (most of our foils run at 90-120 °C), and the effect you want - metallic, holographic, pearlescent or pigment.
01 START WITH THE SURFACE
Paper is not one material. Plain board, coated art paper, OPP-laminated sheets and UV-varnished covers each behave differently under a heated die.
Our standard and pearlescent foils are rated for 90-120 °C across paper boxes, cards, labels and printed sheets, while laminated and coated surfaces hold fine detail well in the same range. If your surface is heat-sensitive, the cold stamping route may fit better.
02 PICK THE EFFECT
Metallic gold and silver give the classic premium look. Holographic (laser) foils add a rainbow shimmer for wine boxes, cosmetics, food packaging and gift items. Pearlescent grades suit premium cards, packaging paper and trademarks.
This matters because the effect decides the grade, and the grade decides your settings. A buyer choosing for a cosmetics carton and a buyer choosing for a cable label are not looking at the same product family.
03 CHECK THE SIZE AND THICKNESS
Our standard roll is 64 cm wide and 120 m long, with a 12 micron PET carrier film - 1.6 kg per roll, 10 rolls per carton. Jumbo rolls of 1.28 m x 240 m are also available, and longer lengths of 240 m, 360 m and 480 m come on progressively larger roll diameters.
What to check: the widest area you stamp per pass, and your machine's foil-advance step. The 12 MU thickness is standard across our range, so the main variable is width and length.
04 TEST BEFORE BULK
The practical selection step most buyers skip is the trial run. Our own application notes recommend testing before bulk use - and our product line covers enough colors and bases that the right match usually exists already.
05 NEXT STEP
Send us your substrate, the effect you want and your machine model, and we will suggest a grade and prepare a sample roll for your test run.
